I’m moving to California for a few months to support my US book launch and I’ve been purging things that I don’t need for the trip. I’ve been choosing just one of three pairs of sunglasses, just a handful of favorite tops, just my most flattering jeans, my coziest sweaters etc. The amazing thing that I’ve noticed is that my picks are just the the items that I wear day to day anyway. My favorite things are the items that make me feel the best, look the best and that I get the most wear out of. ”If I don’t do a bit of a strut in it – ditch it!” That was my battle cry.

Why have three pairs of sunglasses when I only really wear one pair? If I had saved the money on the other sunglasses, sweaters I don’t wear of jeans that sit in the corner of my closet, I’d be sitting on a nice pile of cash. If I only have one pair to look after, I won’t lose it either. Plus, I’m only getting any pleasure from the clothes that I wear. Clothes in the back of my closet don’t contribute to me feeling like a million bucks when I’m walking into a power meeting!

Purging feels amazing! I had friends go through them, I sold the hipster coveted items to the funky thrift store and the rest went to the Sally Ann! It feels awesome to be lean and mean stuff wise. I’ve still got the clothes that I feel amazing in and I even made some money and helped out some folk. What is more of a win win than that.

I feel like having lots of stuff around makes me feel cumbersome in life. There is nothing better than feeling light and fancy free of things. Things really are just things. We load clothes with so many emotions. Rebound skirt, muscle shirt, break up jeans, or fat pants. They’re just clothes. And by ditching them that don’t make you feel 100% is like ditching all of those negative feelings you associate with them. Off you go weekend warrior baby-t.

Choose your favorite things and pitch the rest. You’ll feel like a million bucks everyday and streamlined.

Have an awesome week,

Dave

I’ve heard from the book store managers that the first print edition appreciates the most. So my advice this week is to run out and get one of the last copies for the holiday, friends, kids, Nana and Papa! There are very few left so grab a first edition and profit! :)

This week I’ve decided to give away my weeks discretionary spending. I spend about $600 a week on coffees, clothing, lunches, dinners, movies, gifts and going out with friends. I’m on my own “Cash is King” plan where I take $300 out on Sunday night that lasts me until about Thursday and then I take out another $300 for the weekend. All of my fixed expenses (groceries, housing, car, gas, bills, investment loan payments) come out automatically so I always stay on budget. I’ve used this system for some time and it really works. You should try it too!

Someone I know is starting a new brave venture that I really admire and so I decided that it would benefit him 10 fold to get most of my weekly discretionary spending. Money that I’d just spend on dinners, movies and partying will help him get closer to a dream – and that is totally worth only one week of my down time. I’ll profit in a better way by giving it up.

I’ve set up a plan to survive this week and here it is below. I’ll miss you Starbucks and martinis but I’ll see you both soon!

1. Monetize my cupboard — Do you notice that there is always peanut butter, weird tea and canned potatoes in the depths of your cupboard that you never use? You use keep moving them house to house with you and never eat them. Well I’ve taken inventory of all of my random foods and I’m going to use the business school lesson of monetizing my inventories. I’ve pulled everything out and I’m going to eat it all this week to save me money and keep me alive.

2. No Starbucks or eating out — The second thing I’m going to do is to cut out lunches and coffee. I LOVE coffee and I’m going to cut it out this week. Luckily for everyone who will have to put up with my mood this week is that I found Starbuck intant coffee samples in the cupboard and I’ll drink down my inventories of camamile and lemon tea that I had randomly found in there.

3. I just bought groceries! I hate shopping for groceries. I’m single and eating by myself drives me nuts. There are barrel laughs when you open my fridge door and only see booze, mix and a Brtita. I just spend $43.89 on groceries that compliment my inventory and I’ve planned a menu for the week. Fruit, toast and tea for breakie, soup and sammy’s/ Tuna on salad a for lunches, and I have yummy yet cheap meals in the evening. I bought a ton of fruit and veggies for snacks and some popcorn and some Mr. Noodles for all the TV watching I’ll be doing.

4. I’ve planned a cost free week of entertainment too. I have my family coming over for frozen pizza and ceaser salad, lots of TV nights, inviting myself over to friends for dinner (that I haven’t seen in a while and it’ll be so good to catch up!) and I’m going to work the gym and yoga/power crunch glasses that are paid for with my gym membership. All for free! Other than the sodium spike because of the Mr. Noodles – I should maybe be in better shape. Plus, I bought lemons to flavour free water and I’m only drinking the free tea that I have in my cupboard. It should make me feel better sans pop or booze.

I’m actually really excited about this plan! I was first dreading the challenge due to the fact I never go without anything but I’m pumped to do this. I might even take this plan from a 10 out of 10 to an 11 out of ten by volunteering somewhere to fill an evening. I bet there will be free treats!

It’s amazing how you can still profit without money for a simple little amount of time. Have an awesome week – Got to go Mr. Noodles is boiling.
Dave

Financial health stems from the relationship you have with your money. Do you get warm shivers when you think of the great things money can get you or stabs of pain when you think of your debt? Do you avoid talking about money at all costs or welcome the conversation? How you answered those two questions can tell me how money healthy you are! See which of the below areas you need to “checkup” on?

1. Respect Your Money: This is the single most important lesson to be a savvy money manager. The ability to know exactly how much you have and how much you owe is crucial. The personal power that you gain by knowing where every dollar is going, how much you are paying in interest and how much you are making in any given investment is the first step. Understanding how money can be saved and made gives confidence. Confidence for you to go forth and make more money!

2. Know What Financial Success Looks Like: If you don’t know exactly where you want to end up you’ll always be lost. Figure out exactly what success looks like for you in detail. $1 Million in investable assets or more? Debt free? The freedom to travel at a whim? We all have a desired financial future and knowing what that is in detail is halfway to getting there. Dream it, then make it happen!

3. Invest Like You’re Already Wealthy: The best way to be rich is to emulate the rich. How do they invest? How do they save? How do they think about money? How do they live? Once you re-code your brain to ponder, play, and plan like they do you’ll get closer to your goal. Money is what money does.

4. Chuck Your Limiting Beliefs: What is keeping your from being wealthy right now? Do you you have negative associations towards wealth? Have you taken old beliefs from parents or social groups that aren’t true to your core beliefs? Once you know what they are and know that they no longer serve you, you can leave them behind and wade in the warm warm waters of wealth.

5. Determine What Money will REALLY Give Me: Money just for the sake of having money won’t make you happy. Fulfilling your life long dream to dive off the great barrier reef, spoil grand kids, take the entire family on trips, or have the freedom to live around the world really will. Money is just a means to something more. Decide up front what you will really have if you have this money – respect, freedom, creativity, achievement maybe? Remembering what value the money will bring you will motivate you to be the best investor you can at the same time it will encourage you to keep plugging when markets are lousy.

A healthy association with your money can bring so much to life. Hope you all have an awesome week,

Money is that one subject that everyone dances around when dating. We politely try not to talk directly about it but it is woven into the fabric of our conversation. Let’s throw it right out there into the middle of the table, by the flowers, and address it shall we? What are always the two very first questions someone asks on a date? “What do you do?” and “Where do you live?” Which is the money talk equivalent of “How much money do you make and how much real estate can you afford?” Keeping your eye out for money problems will be the first sign of hidden people problems. Remember money problems have nothing to do with dollars and cents and everything to do with emotions and fears.

When dating look for someone who respects their money and is in control of it. It is the surest sign that they also respect themselves and are in control of their lives. Someone doesn’t necessarily have to make gobs and gobs of money. That isn’t what I’m saying but they should at least be strong in the following areas. It’ll reflect positively in how they will manage your relationship moving forward.

Money balance – do they balance their cheque book? If they make more than they spend and always have money in the bank it shows that the person in mature and confident with themselves. They don’t need to blow every dollar they make each month. They live within their means and have cheque book and personal life in balance.

Savers – do they save or spend like drunken sailors? If they have money when the month runs out then that is a great sign. Your potential “Snookums” needs to have a “saver” mentality. It shows that they are responsible, grounded, committed, and planning for the long term.

Asset lover – do they appreciate big assets? If your date has proven that they are interested in building assets over the long haul it speaks volumes that they are ambitious and driven. It shows that they want to increase their financial position and has thought out and implemented a plan to get it. If the asset is a home it shows that they are interested in “planting roots” which shows stability.

Debt free – do they only have healthy debt? Does your date have baggage aka consumer debt? If you’re date is debt free it means that they don’t have the emotional baggage that comes with the debt. People overspend because they’re unhappy or trying to keep up with the Joneses and if they are free of credit card or personal debt then you know that they are self-assured. A lot of people who make tons of money spend tons more money. This race to always have the best and most of everything when they can’t afford it always leaves people coming last.

Just after a few dates you’ll be able to tell if someone loves their money or not. By seeing some of these money problems up front it could be a window to other issues lurching behind the unpaid bill. If you know your date is cheque book balanced, is a saver, is an asset lover and is bad debt free, you will hopefully save yourself some grief down the road.
