Want to retire now? You might be able to. We are often told that we need million and millions of dollars to retire. That is only true depending on what kind of retirement we want for ourselves. If we want to continue with new cars every few years, living in our McMansions, eating out all the time, and enjoying the big city life we probably need even more!

But think how great it would be to just leave it all behind and enjoy life for what it is. If you didn’t have to work you could sleep in late, enjoy a leisurely coffee at a cute little coffee place with hipsters and artists. You could have long walks looking in all of the store windows. You could meet someone for coffee everyday and start doing all of the other things that you long for day to day.

Doesn’t that sound awesome? Let’s find out how much it would cost. Now if you cut all of your expenses and started fresh, how much would you need to live on? Let’s take the example of moving to a cheap retirement destination now, for example Mexico, Northern Ontario, or Istanbul like where I want to retire. Look around and see if you could get a cute pad for $500-$1,000 a month. You would need to eat, have some extra spending cash, and maybe some money to a have a trip home once a year to see all the workers!

Does that scenario sounded good to you? I could do that for $2,500 a month. Here is how I’d do it. I would have a pad for $800 per month, eat for $700 and have another $1,000 a month for travelling and trips home. To get $2,500 a month at a very conservative 6% return by laddering GICs I would only need $500,000–far from the $3 million that people call for today.

Now how would I get there? Knowing what my dollar amount is I can do some extra jobs before I go and teach English to earn extra money when I retire. I probably won’t be off to Istanbul this month, but I could if I wanted! My point is to set your dollar amount and start saving.

Anchor yourself to how awesome early retirement would be and look at ways to do it. The standard of living is so much cheaper in fantastic areas of the world. Get excited by the idea that it is possible now.

Life should be about enjoying our time, more freedom, more time with friends and family and more joy. Why spend another day in a bad office cubicle?

Love your money and it’ll love you back with early retirement and an awesome life.

Many people ask me what I do day to day and so this blog is about my Financial Coaching practice.  I’ve been working with individual clients for over three years now and I’ve had huge successes with all of them.  My clients have started new businesses, got their ultimate career that they’ve always wanted, mastered investing, and overall started building wealth and happiness.  My philosophy to financial success starts with knowing exactly what you want in life, and why you want what you want. Then we harness the power of  YOUR genius and the market to get it for you.

Think of the last few times you’ve been sitting in front of a financial expert. They seem to be the ones doing all of the telling, right?  What to invest in, how to cut back on things, when to make payments, and then where to sign.  Instead of just looking at the numbers like most financial specialists do, I motivate clients with the possibility for their best life, and then we implement it – using the power of money.

Once I’ve helped my clients decide what specifically they want in life, we work together to decide why they want what they want based on their core values.  Values are what motivate us to do what we do and can energize us to get through the most difficult of times.  When we understand why we want what we want in life we become super motivated to achieve it.  It’s like adding a constant jet fuel to our ambitions.

Implementing my strategy starts with a carte blanche approach.  We build a “Life Status” around all of the things that they want in life.  We harness the successes of the past and unlock individual freedoms. We look back to see when they performed at their best in various areas of life, and then we apply that same gold standard to their financial areas of life (career, investing, saving, and spending).

Everything that you want goes on the Life Status and we start them in order of their importance to you.  It’s an amazing feeling to take action towards the things that you know will make you happy.  And better than that, we implement strategies to get the market to pay for them.  Like how I got the stock market to pay for my new car!

Let me build a program around your needs. First, decide what you want, and we will get your career and the market to make it happen!

The birds are chirping and the bees are busy visiting all of the fresh flowers. The sun is staying up longer and the big sweaters and coats are about to be packed away for another season.  Time to clean out some clutter and enjoy spring with a fresh clean start.  Why not start with your wallet??!

It’s amazing what people keep in their wallets–old receipts, business cards, point cards, pictures, mints, and sometimes even locks of hair!  Cleaning out our wallets will serve the same purpose as cleaning our homes.  Let’s start fresh this spring with a new, slim, sexy, organized, and efficient wallet.

Having a wallet that you enjoy dealing with will change your mood towards the money that is held in it.  If your wallet is a cavern of slips, cards, and ATM receipts, looking into it each time you need to get your money could be a nightmare. If searching for your credit card makes you curse, it will effect your relationship with money.

So let’s spring clean your wallet and start the season in style.  Here is what you’ve got to do.

Get an awesome wallet:

First, go grab a new ah-mazing wallet.  I got a camouflaged Prada one (on sale of course).  It’s sleek and stylish and I love grabbing it off my desk in the morning and pulling it out to pay for something.  It makes me happy to deal with and it’s kinda awesome.  Buy one that reflects your personality and that makes you smile when you use it.

Organize non-wallet items:

Take everything out of your old wallet  and lay it on a table.  If there are business cards that you need to follow up on, put them in a pile and mark a date in your calendar to fire off an email for each one.  If  you have receipts, put them in your filing system.  Pictures can be stored on your phone or Blackberry.

Ditch Your Point Cards:

If you read my blogs or saw me in the Toronto Star last Monday, you’ll know that I don’t think point cards are worth it.  My wallet has my license, debit card, one credit card, my own business cards, and cash.  That’s it!  It’s lean and mean and all I need. Point programs always advertise you on a beach enjoying freedom from the work grind.  Well I enjoy freedom from point cards every single day by getting rid of them all!

Organize your wallet:

Once purged of all the extra cards, receipts, pics, etc., put one week’s cash allowance in your sleek, sexy wallet.  Put your business cards in one slot to keep them crisp and clean.  They reflect you and your trade.  Organize your bank cards so they are easy to whip out.  I have my debit, credit and license layers in order of use at my fingertips.  Quick draw!

Write three things you want:

With my cards I have written down the three things that I really really want this year.  They are on the back of one of my business cards and every time I pick a card or cash I can see them.  It re-enforces three important things to work towards that will make me happy.  I’ve been doing this for years now.  Try it.  It really works!

Your new and improved wallet will now reflect the way you see money.  Keep only what you need and organize them for easy use.  Your wallet should be enjoyable, efficient, and energetic.  Just like you!

Have an awesome week,

Dave

If you have a good relationship with your money you would never pay $120 to have a credit card!  You’d never be caught dead paying interest when you don’t pay it off completely! Hells no–you’d never pay foreign service fees when you use it in other countires!  You love your money better than that and because you’re a money maverick you get the cards to pay you, right?  I just had my US$ and personal MasterCard pay me $187.37 this year and I only paid a $25 fee for the US$ card  This is how I did it…

Charge All Your FIXED Costs And Big Purchases

I charge all of my fixed costs onto my no fee BMO MasterCard CashBack card, like gas, insurance, cell phone, gym, utilities, cable, and internet.  This way I get cash back on the things I need to use my card on and collect cash back dollars month by month.  I also use my card for trips, furniture, and other big one-time purchases, and it all adds up at the end of the year.  I got $83.65 back on these things this year.  That means free utilities for a month or a nice dinner with a good friend.

Use Cash To Limit Your Monthly Spending

I’m a cash king.  I use cash for my day to day spending to fix my spending and then get cash back from my fixed costs that I put on my card.  Cash is best for my variable spending on things like clothes, lunches, food, entertainment, and coffees, and is a proven way to lower your spending.  Set $300 or whatever you need a week for variable spending and take that cash out at the beginning of the week and don’t take any more out. If I have a crazy champagne and lobster night I know another $300 will come next week!

You Get Extra Perks With Your Card For Free

Gas is another fixed cost that I use my card on.  I get an extra 1.5% back when I go to any Shell station in Canada and over a year this really adds up.  When I book a trip or make a big purchase like electronics or furniture the card gives me extended warranty and purchase protection plus discounts up to 25% at National Car Rental and Alamo all for FREE.

Get A US$ Card For US Trips

Because I spend a lot of time on business in New York and Los Angeles, I also have a US$ BMO MasterCard CashBack card.  I have US$ fixed charges for my business come out on this card that added up to $103.72 – $25 fee this year.  If a trip is cheaper in US$ I will use this card, and anytime I make business trips I use this card.  It pays me with cash back plus I save the 2-3% foreign service fee my Canadian $ card would charge me each time I used it in the US.

Have Your Bank Pay Your Card For You

Many people don’t know this but you can ask your bank to pay off your balance at the end of each month right from your chequing account.  Because I know what all my fixed cards add up to I know how much will come out of my account.  I save on transactions that I would use paying each bill separately, I never pay interest by missing payments, and I know that my card will go to zero each month without me taking any action at all.  Win, win.

Get the credit card to pay you interest at the end of the year!
Have an amazing week,

Dave

The number one reason I write my books, articles, and blogs is to show everyone how that they can harness the power of money to live their ultimate life.  Money saved on something that isn’t important to you can be spent on something that is very important to you.

I love stellar restaurants.  I also love my family.  So when they were here visiting at Christmas I wanted to show them all the best places in Hollywood that I’ve found.  I took them to my favorite French bistro, Figaro, in Los Felix Village.  We watched for stars at the super yummy Joan’s on 3rd.  We even went to West Hollywood to the classic Chateau Marmont for dinner under the stars. This city has an endless number of great places to eat!

Now eating at all the best places can get pricey, so we would average down the expensive dinners with less expensive ones.  We balanced an expensive five star dinner with pizza and salad at my place.  We had brunch at an adorable, inexpensive diner on Fairfax before hitting a trendy hot spot in the evening.  (Many times the diners are my fav!)

I had some morning show appearances in San Diego so I took my family with me.    After my interviews we asked locals about cheap but chic places to eat in Little Italy.  On the way back we drove up the beautiful Pacific highway and ate at a sea side restaurant under the sun.  It was not only an amazing meal but a great view of the Pacific. Definitely a meal to remember.

It’s ok to spend money on the things you love. The smart way to do this is to average down your costs whenever you can.

Have an awesome week but averaged down week,
Dave

Where is the one place that you always think of when you’re knee deep in snow?  Unwrapping another turtleneck with a kitten on it from Oma?  Choking down dry turkey at Auntie Gertrudes?  No. Vegas Baby!
My family was visiting me in Hollywood this year and the day before Christmas Eve we decided to drive to Vegas.  Yeah, that’s right, Vegas!

This is a dream come true for me!  It’s been a mission of mine to spend Christmases all over the world with my family.  They are super important to me and I want to make sure that the time we spend together is the best time we can.  Two years ago we went to Egypt and who knows where we will go next year.  Family makes me happy and that is where I spend my money while having an amazing time.

But just because I choose to spend money on family doesn’t mean I won’t get the best for the lowest price, right?  We booked at the Flamingo the morning we left and got an ah-mazing price.  It was basically free.  I took my charming mom, smiling like an angel, up to the desk with me and explained that my family had never been to Vegas before and that we would LOVE the best suite. Well, mom’s looks paid off and we were on the top floor with the best view of the strip.

We walked the strip, went to some great restaurants, and waited for Christmas day to swoop in and get all of the boxing week sales.  My uber charm at Prada had the staff pulling things from the back that hadn’t gone on sale yet.  I got a classic, winter jacket for 30% off that would have been long gone if it ever made it to the rack.  To the charming goes the spoils!

For entertainment we changed up the traditional Christmas Eve church service for Boyz II Men!  They sang their hits, Mo-Town classics (my fav), and a Christmas carol set.  Those guys still have it.  Everyone should see a well performed “runningman” at Christmas.

For the same amount of money that I would have spent back home having an expensive, over the top traditional holiday, we went on a once in a lifetime Vegas-mas that we’ll all remember.  Isn’t making great memories with family what the holidays is all about?  Gifts I’ll grow out of.  Dinners at home blend together over time.  White Tigers and show girls are forever.

Can’t wait to see where we go next year!  Love your money and it’ll love you back with holidays to remember.

I bet everyone has some new years’ money resolutions on their list, right Bellos and Bellas?  I’m used to seeing these following money resolutions on goals lists:

Pay down debt

Increase my net worth

Track my spending

Spend less on junk

Save eight months of salary

Well I have a great tool to help you achieve all of these on day one of 2011!  It’s called Mint.com. It’s the old Quicken.com and I’ve been using it religiously since I found Quicken.com.  And the best part of this program is that it is FREE!

You add all of your bank accounts, investments, credit cards, loans, assets and mortgages and it tracks all of your spending, budgets, net worth and investment returns.  What fun! You can add accounts from different banks, business and personal, and it even tracks my US Bank accounts for when I spend the winter down here.  All in once place!

Mint.com is available as an iPhone App!

Mint.com has an amazing app that is password protected and allows me to scan all of my cash, credit cards, budget and net worth on the first page.  You can scan your last transactions from any of your accounts, check credit card balances, and feel safe a check has gone through.  If I had to do those things with all my accounts I would have to check with four separate companies. Instead it takes two touches on my iPhone.

Every transaction that goes through any account or card gets categorized by Mint as best as it can.  If it doesn’t recognze someting it will keep it uncategorized and wait for you to assign it a category.  While waiting for someone at a mall (my mom) I’m able to categorize my transactions with a big smile.

It Helps Me Love My Money More

Mint also flags you when a big payment has gone in or out of one of your accounts and when an account has a low balance.  I had a friend coming to visit me in LA last month and Mint emailed me that I had a low balance in my US Bank Checking account.  It flagged that a big check had come out early, so I was able to transfer more funds before the weekend.  I would have never known that the check had come out early and I could have been out money.

Budgets Galore and More!

Another great plus for Mint is that it gives you great freedom to set budgets for the month.  You can set them and it tracks how much you have spent for the month on all of your budgets on the very first page of the iPhone app.  If you click on it it shows how all of your budgets are tracking.  If you do happen to go over (and I know none of my money loving readers would go over) it will send you an email letting you know.

Mint also sends weekly updates to your email account to let you know how much you’ve spent the following week.  It includes your net worth which comes in so very handy to keep you motivated to keep saving and making more money! Can I get a whoop whoop for making more money?

Keep loving your money with amazing tools like Mint.com and it’ll love you back with accomplished 2011 resolutions!

Happy holidays everyone! I can’t believe this year has only 23 days to go.

To help spread that holiday season in my place here in Hollywood I decided to get a tree. My family is coming to stay for the holiday and I wanted to have one for them and to make warm and snowless California feel more like home.

My place here has a garden and I thought why not get a live Christmas tree that I could plant in the garden when I was done with it? I wanted to get some plants and then I’d get to use the tree as my holiday tree for free.

I went shopping at a local garden shop and found the cutest little Charlie Brown Christmas tree and HAD to get it. It was leaning to one side all crammed in a corner. I think one of his little branches actually moved a bit to get my attention. He’ll be great for the backyard and perfect for my apartment.

To make him as Christmasy as possible I went to Target and the .99 cent store and decked him out for $10. He got tons of colorful mini-balls, some candy canes, silver beads and an angel for the top. His top branch is a bit wobbly so the angel had to be taped to the top but she is there and shining bright!

I actually got too many items for his little size and so I’m actually taking what I didn’t use back to use those dollars for something that I need. If I learned anything from business school it was proper inventory management. Money sitting in things that I’ll never use could be earning me interest in a high interest account and so I’ll take anything back that I don’t use and you guys should too.

In January I’ll look forward to digging a hole in a special spot in my garden and then watching him grow. Right now I’ve wrapped him in lights and he’s glowing and filling the air with that Chirstmas pine scent as I write this now! Win win for me and for the tree because he gets to re-locate to an awesome garden. I think he’s happy he got my attention back at the garden store. :)

Keep loving your money and it’ll treat you with your own Christmas tree that keeps on giving back!

Have a festive week,

Dave
