Now that I’ve landed in Hollywood and I have my amazing pad here I naturally need to decorate it.  I’m planning on being Canada’s youngest snow bird and spend six months here in the sun and write and work on some exciting projects.  (I’ve already practised driving slowly in the fast lane with my signal on, looking for a discount mall).  Seeing that I only will need the place for six months I naturally wanted it to be on the cheap yet chic.  Exactly what I do well. Because my places have always been modern and minimalisticy at home – I wanted to change it up this time.

I thought that I would change it up and be a bit out there.  To decorate in a style that I would never do at home.  Why not?  Eccentricity is what I do well, especially on a budget. My guest house is 100 years old and so are the neighboring houses.  My place has really beautiful dark hardwood floors, huge floor moldings and those crystal door knobs you find in other century homes.  I decided to play up these accents and make the place super Victorian. I’m here for six months why not shake up my decorating comfort zone. I got fancy flowered plates, and decorative knives from Target that cost less than $100.  I got the biggest, comfiest Lady Penelope sofa at IKEA that was deeply discounted.  It is blue and white with decorative pineapples!  It’s so awesome. The complete opposite of my sleek grey modern sofa from my loft.

Not only was it only $450 but it suits the place so well.  It is super comfy for watching CNBC on in the AM too. From IKEA I also purchased a decorative bed and mattress and some other kitchen and home essentials for another $700. Knowing that it is so easy to run up a huge tab decorating a new place, I separated all of my purchases into NEEDS and WANTS.  The needs were the sofa, bed, mattress and TV. A trader needs his CNBC, right?  Now with the WANTS I got everything used.  TV stands, bed side tables, coffee tables, and decorative paintings.  Some I’m still on the hunt for.  I hit up all of the antique markets, craigslist, garage sales and flea markets and bought or continue to buy the little things I need for a steal. Now how do I keep the dime you ask as per the title?

When I leave I purposefully purchased quality antiques, furniture and furnishings that I’ll be able to sell at mostly what I paid for them.  I made sure that I got an awesome 40 inch LED TV that when I sell it in six months it’ll still be worth most of it’s value.  Compared to a 32 inch cheapo brand that wouldn’t be worth squat in six months. The plan is to live in this eccentric and fun place and then leave with most of my initial investment back.  Gotta love your money. Keep loving your money and it’ll help you love your place – even for six months.  Check out my book in Kindle format on Amazon.com.

You can read it on your iPhone or iPad too! Have an awesome week,

Dave

I’m moving to California for a few months to support my US book launch and I’ve been purging things that I don’t need for the trip.  I’ve been choosing just one of three pairs of sunglasses, just a handful of favorite tops, just my most flattering jeans, my coziest sweaters etc.  The amazing thing that I’ve noticed is that my picks are just the the items that I wear day to day anyway.  My favorite things are the items that make me feel the best, look the best and that I get the most wear out of.  ”If I don’t do a bit of a strut in it – ditch it!”  That was my battle cry.

Why have three pairs of sunglasses when I only really wear one pair?  If I had saved the money on the other sunglasses, sweaters I don’t wear of jeans that sit in the corner of my closet, I’d be sitting on a nice pile of cash. If I only have one pair to look after, I won’t lose it either.  Plus, I’m only getting any pleasure from the clothes that I wear.  Clothes in the back of my closet don’t contribute to me feeling like a million bucks when I’m walking into a power meeting!

Purging feels amazing!  I had friends go through them, I sold the hipster coveted items to the funky thrift store and the rest went to the Sally Ann!  It feels awesome to be lean and mean stuff wise.  I’ve still got the clothes that I feel amazing in and I even made some money and helped out some folk.  What is more of a win win than that.

I feel like having lots of stuff around makes me feel cumbersome in life.  There is nothing better than feeling light and fancy free of things.  Things really are just things.  We load clothes with so many emotions. Rebound skirt, muscle shirt, break up jeans, or fat pants.  They’re just clothes.  And by ditching them that don’t make you feel 100% is like ditching all of those negative feelings you  associate with them.  Off you go weekend warrior baby-t.

Choose your favorite things and pitch the rest.  You’ll feel like a million bucks everyday and streamlined.

Have an awesome week,

Dave

Hey Everyone,

Since my first print run in May I’ve already almost sold out of my first edition!  Thanks for everyone who has bought a copy. I really appreciate your support.

I’ve heard from the book store managers that the first print edition appreciates the most.  So my advice this week is to run out and get one of the last copies for the holiday, friends, kids, Nana and Papa! There are very few left so grab a first edition and profit!  :)

Here is where to still get a copy.  The second print is coming in two weeks!

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving everyone!  My Thanksgiving was ah-mazing.  It was the first time that I hosted dinner with all the fixin’s and everyone said I did an amazing job.  When I try something new I like to do it perfect the very fist time so that everyone has a great time and on a budget.   Let me share some pics of my golden bird and my tips to keep everyone maximizing their holiday with friends and family and their dollar.

Here are my tips below:

1. Make sure that you shop for all of your groceries at the no frills supermarket.  When spending on a huge amount of groceries this really helps bring down the budget.  Get veggies, stuffing, condements, etc. here and save a bundle!

2. Get all of your decorations, table clothes and napkins at the local dollar store.  This will make the place festive but save you some fivers.

3. Buy your turkey at a butcher fresh.  Yes, I said it!  I always spend a bit more for a fresh turkey but my friends and family are worth it.  Remember my philosophy on money – save on everyday things to pump back into items that make you truly happy.  Plus my extra savings will MORE than pay for the extra $10 bucks for a mean bird.

4. After the night take inventory of extra booze that you didn’t drink and you won’t drink and take it back.  I manage my booze and food inventory with an iron fist and booze in my cupboard that I won’t drink is inefficient inventory management.  The store will take it back with a receipt or you can change it for something you drink.

5. Feast on yummy turkey pies, soup, sammies, and anything else you can make with the left overs.  I won’t have to buy groceries for a week after Monday dinner.  I won’t want to see another turkey in a while but that is why we only have them three times a year, right?

Gobble up those savings and have an awesome week, Dave

This week I’ve decided to give away my weeks discretionary spending.  I spend about $600 a week on coffees, clothing, lunches, dinners, movies, gifts and going out with friends.  I’m on my own “Cash is King” plan where I take $300 out on Sunday night that lasts me until about Thursday and then I take out another $300 for the weekend.  All of my fixed expenses (groceries, housing, car, gas, bills, investment loan payments) come out automatically so I always stay on budget.  I’ve used this system for some time and it really works.  You should try it too!

Someone I know is starting a new brave venture that I really admire and so I decided that it would benefit him 10 fold to get most of my weekly discretionary spending.  Money that I’d just spend on dinners, movies and partying will help him get closer to a dream – and that is totally worth only one week of my down time.  I’ll profit in a better way by giving it up.

I’ve set up a plan to survive this week and here it is below.  I’ll miss you Starbucks and martinis but I’ll see you both soon!

1. Monetize my cupboard — Do you notice that there is always peanut butter, weird tea and canned potatoes in the depths of your cupboard that you never use?  You use keep moving them house to house with you and never eat them.  Well I’ve taken inventory of all of my random foods and I’m going to use the business school lesson of monetizing my inventories.  I’ve pulled everything out and I’m going to eat it all this week to save me money and keep me alive.

2. No Starbucks or eating out — The second thing I’m going to do is to cut out lunches and coffee.  I LOVE coffee and I’m going to cut it out this week.  Luckily for everyone who will have to put up with my mood this week is that I found Starbuck intant coffee samples in the cupboard and I’ll drink down my inventories of camamile and lemon tea that I had randomly found in there.

3. I just bought groceries!  I hate shopping for groceries.  I’m single and eating by myself drives me nuts.  There are barrel laughs when you open my fridge door and only see booze, mix and a Brtita.  I just spend $43.89 on groceries that compliment my inventory and I’ve planned a menu for the week.  Fruit, toast and tea for breakie, soup and sammy’s/ Tuna on salad a for lunches, and I have yummy yet cheap meals in the evening.  I bought a ton of fruit and veggies for snacks and some popcorn and some Mr. Noodles for all the TV watching I’ll be doing.

4. I’ve planned a cost free week of entertainment too.  I have my family coming over for frozen pizza and ceaser salad, lots of TV nights, inviting myself over to friends for dinner (that I haven’t seen in a while and it’ll be so good to catch up!) and I’m going to work the gym and yoga/power crunch glasses that are paid for with my gym membership.  All for free!  Other than the sodium spike because of the Mr. Noodles – I should maybe be in better shape.  Plus, I bought lemons to flavour free water  and I’m only drinking the free tea that I have in my cupboard.  It should make me feel better sans pop or booze.

I’m actually really excited about this plan!  I was first dreading the challenge due to the fact I never go without anything but I’m pumped to do this.  I might even take this plan from a 10 out of 10 to an 11 out of ten by volunteering somewhere to fill an evening.  I bet there will be free treats!

It’s amazing how you can still profit without money for a simple little amount of time.  Have an awesome week – Got to go Mr. Noodles is boiling.

From my experience with people and money I’ve decided we’re just fancy monkeys.  We respond by positive re-enforcement successfully and not very successfully to negative ones.  Negative re-enforcement will work for a short period of time but I can guarantee you that a banana will get you a monkey to do something faster than a finger wagging.

When we need to go somewhere in our lives financially we need to set the course and then anchor ourselves with what we will truly have when we get there.  If you want to save $500 a month into your RSP this year then there are some steps you need to take.

1. Visualize how amazing you want your retirement to be.  Greek Islands?  Turkish Coast?  Maybe NYC brownstone?  Get the excited feeling when you think about it.  Butterflies single that you’re there.

2. Set up the $500 automatically to come out of your account so you don’t have the chance to stop it.  Be sure to set up the auto investment part too so that you are buying good investments that will pay you a dividend to get you there faster.  Dividends are the key to my hart to by lots.

3. This is the best part.  What are you going to get if you do it?  You could get hit by a tractor and not be able to enjoy it so how do you still live for the now while saving?  What kind of banana do you want?

If you invested $500 a month into an registered retirement plan you would get some tax back at the end of the year.  Allocate that money towards a trip, motorcycle or scuba diving lessons that would truly motivate you to keep up the saving.  You get an amazing retirement and get to live for today too.

Love your money and it’ll love you back with delicious bananas,

Dave

Everyday I wake up and think about all of the fun things that I’m going to do today.  I have found that the key to happiness is to figure out what makes you happy, and then build those things into your daily routine. Life should be a smorgasbord: everyday you should get to choose from a giant table covered in delicious food. Everything that makes your mouth water should be served up for you to enjoy every day!

Through coaching I’ve discovered that I have strong values of family, respect, achievement, creativity, joy and freedom.  Once I discovered this, I could see the world through different coloured lenses.  I understand what truly makes me happy based on my core values, and I can build each one of them into my life.

For example, to satisfy creativity I blog and write for other papers and sites to express my love of money, and how it needs to be treated like any other important relationship in your life.  I love doing this.  I satisfy my value for family by seeing them every Sunday (or more) for dinner and watching True Blood with my brother.  I horseback ride every Thursday and most Sunday’s because I know how proud I am of myself when I master a new equestrian skill.  I’m going to start jumping very soon!  My value of freedom is satisfied by working for myself and making way more money at it.  I also get respect from people, and help to change people’s lives for the better.

Joy is created when I fill each day with little things that make me happy–like soup.  I love soup.  Soup is delicious and cost effective for lunch.  I find gourmet places to have soup a few times a week. It gets me out of bed in a hurry each morning.  I also love stock trading each day, window shopping, seeing late movies by myself, and having coffees with friends.  I also love long drives!

I make sure that I do some (or all) of these things each day.  Like the smorgasbord, I step up and enjoy everything in life that makes me happy each week.  Figure out what makes you happy and build them into each and everyday of  your life.  I am one of those constantly happy people, and others often wonder, “how are you always so happy?”

It’s the soup.

If you’ve been following my blogs you’ll know that I prefer to use cash when I can.  I love hard currency for a number of reasons.  For instance I find that you spend less, you have a natural spending ceiling (it’s gone when it’s gone), you get better prices for big purchases, and it is harder to part with than just swiping away.
I do however use credit cards when there is a financial benefit to me.  I calculate all of my monthly expenses that can be charged to my card and have them come off automatically each month. This saves me time and service fees – I’ve made sure that I can never miss a payment now.  All my gas is charged to the card and I also charge large payments like computers, hotels or airline flights to extend their warranties and add travel protection.  My choice of credit card reward program is an annual fee free card that gives me some sort of points.  If I charge $590 a month I used to get .5% cash back on everything and 1.5% back on my gas purchases, which would give me $59.40 back a year for free just from my monthly resources not including my big purchases like trips, furniture and electronics. Remember that I didn’t pay a yearly fee so that money is all gravy for me!  I have found a new card that saves me even more which I have outlined after my expenses.
Monthly Charges:
Mobile Phone                    $60
Television/Internet          $80
Electricity                           $40
Gym                                      $50
Gas                                       $200
Car Insurance                    $145
Home Insurance               $15
Just recently I have found a no charge cash back card. It’s called the MBNA Smart Cash MasterCard and it is no annual fee card that gives 3% on gas, 3% on groceries and pharmacies, and 1% on everything else.  Based on my spending it dramatically increases my cash back at the end of the year!   They even have a promotion right now where you can get 5% back on all purchases for 6 months. On the same purchases from above I’d get $118.80 a year before my large purchases.  That equals some cool shoes that I can enjoy for free based on my financial prowess and saves me a ton of time not paying all of those bills independently.  Time that I can be kickin’ back with my new free kicks.
Have an awesome Tuesday,
Dave

The one thing that I can’t live without today is my sexy smartphone.  It’s the first thing that I reach for when I wake up to see what the market is doing! I listen to music on it, I track my spending, I trade on it, the calendar tells me where to go or who to meet, I keep in constant contact with my friends and family by texting or facebook and work with email – I even make a call every so often.  It has become essential to my life but knowing that I love money more than even it – I won’t let the cost get over $5o before tax.

Recently I had seen the cost of my bill creep up to around $86 with tax based on my usage.  Knowing that there are all of these new telecom competitors entering our market with fantastic smartphone right now is a great time to smoosh you bill.  I called yesterday and reduced my bill from around $86 a month to $52 including tax!  Total score, right.  If I stay within my plan limits that will save me $408 a year!  That is enough for a flight to LA or NY to have an amazing weekend with friends.  Here are my steps to get those same savings while improving your plan and then re-invest them into your own happiness !  Win win win.

1. Run around town and check out all of the carriers Smartphone plans and deals.  Be sure to check your office fax room fist.  The best deals are offered to employees of large companies so see if you can get a group rate based on your employer.

2. Find the best deal that would reduce your bill to around $50 that includes unlimited after 5pm and weekends calling, over 500MB of date or more based on your usage, unlimited texting, and all the Voicemail and caller ID options.  You should be able to get your smartphone bill down around $50 a month.  No one needs to spend more than this on a phone bill.  If data is your money evil then look for wi-fi locations to use less.

3. Call your carrier and ask them to cheapen your plan based on the fact that there are all of these new competitors out there with cheaper plans.  This guy is just a door to the person who has the real power to humour them as the try to take $5 to $10 off your bill or tell you that is the cheapest.  Say “Thanks so much but it is still way too much, can you now tell me how much it would be to cancel”.  Now watch the alarm bells go off as he offers you the moon and his first born.  Ask to be transferred to the customer loyalty department if he doesn’t send you directly there.  Now you’re “wurking” it out the right way.  You are on your way to crazy savings!

4. When you get to the loyalty department charm them with everything you’ve got.  This department gets all of the livid customers and you being cheeky and flirty is a welcome treat for them.  I’ll joke and say “Sandy – is that the best you can give your favourite customer?  I’d cancel and pay the fee just for the principle that you’re not giving me your best deal!”  ”You know I’m your favourite customer Sandy – give me your best plan”.  The telecoms are being squeezed by the new competitors and they have lists of all the best deals.  Have them compare your usage to the list of competitor plans they have and get the cheapest rate you can.  Play hard to get until you have your ideal plan for as cheap as you can get it.  It’s like dating – they’ll chase what runs!

5. Once you get your best plan keep scouring the earth for a better deal.  If you find one call them up and try to get that option.  If your bill ever gets messed up or they charge the wrong amount – phone your smartphone company and try to get some free stuff.  Again ask for the loyalty department and see what they can do for you.  They’re your money saving buddies!

6. Buy the common stock of your major telecom and let the dividends pay your smartphone bill.  They all pay great dividends, have great growth potential as mobile phone penetration in Canada increases and are telecoms are relatively recession proof.  Your phone would be the last thing you would cancel if you were down on your luck.  If you get a 3-5% dividend yield from owning your own telecom like Bell, Rogers or Telus with a $10,000 investment – you would get $300-500 a year to go towards your bill.  Why not get them to pay the entire thing?

Hope you enjoyed my blog today.  Keep loving your money and there will be $408 savings to love you back from your bill!

Have an awesome week,

Dave
