I'm not against this concept of addressing retirement first. However, if a RESP is accumulated with focus and discipline over approximately 15 years, isn't there still opportunity to transfer contributions and earned income into the parent's RRSPs, again tax-deferred? It seems like if properly managed that rule, allows parents with only a finite amount of capital to put RRSP contributions on hold "somewhat" if they remain committed to re-directing the excess from the RESPs to their RRSP in the long term.

Hi Paul, I'm all about keeping blue chip dividend paying companies inside and outside of my RSP. Every few months I even write calls on my position for even more income. In my opinion that's all the growth we'll get for a while. There are some great ETFs that have this strategy built in that I've mentioned previously. Horizons and BMO has ZWB.
Thanks for your comment,
Dave

I just wanted to say that was a good point you made here which i have never read before. (and I subscribe too and read a lot of these type of financial help sites).

Your point about Boomers starting to actually dip into the retirement funds and use them possibly affecting your future fund values? Maybe that's a good point to start holding more good quality dividend paying stocks directly rather then using MF's going forward?

Hi Michael,
I like HEF for the yield. It includes life insurance companies, as you mentioned, and the covered call premiums that the fund collects is higher because of the perceived risk associated with that group. Good trading!

Nice to see a wider array of covered call etf's on the market. Between the BMO covered call canadian banks etf, and the AlphaPro Enhanced Income Financial, which one would you prefer? Would the hef's diversification across banks/insurance/asset management tend to outperform just the banking sector over the long run?

Hi Michael,

I LOVE U.S REITs right now. A perfect scenario of rising rates in the future (they can only go up from here) and a yield hungry investment community. I like AGNC, NLY, OLP and LXP. They all have solid yields like AGNC. I build a basket of them and ride out the current market uncertainty with those great income streams.

Hi David,

Speaking of dividends, what are your thoughts on US REIT's? As long as US rates stay low (which I assume they will be slower to increase compared to Canada), should those dividends be sustainable? I am referring to us reit's such as American Capital Agency Corp (Ticker AGNC), where the past 4 dividends have resulted in a yearly dividend of around 15%.
